FALL SCHOOL ON

CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLIES

October, 22-24, 2024 | Phoenix, Arizona

Interest in Citizens’ Assemblies is spreading across the US and Canada. A growing number of public authorities are commissioning deliberative processes whilst the public demands new forms of public participation that redefine democracy.

This fall, we bring you an opportunity to join the deliberative community, learn from leading experts and practitioners and bring home practical knowledge for your community.

The school is designed for civil servants, politicians, civil society members, and private sector representatives who are involved in policy-making and are eager to understand and implement Citizens' Assemblies and other deliberative processes.

By participating, you will join a growing community of democratic innovators committed to empowering citizens and transforming the future of democracy. Whether you are a policymaker looking to implement new methods of public engagement, or a civil society leader seeking to advocate for more inclusive decision-making processes, our school offers the tools, insights, and connections you need to make a meaningful impact.

This Citizens’ Assembly School is organised in partnership with the National Civic League and hosted by the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes of the Arizona State University.

THE FORMAT

Each plenary session is designed to foster deep understanding, featuring real-world case studies that highlight the successes and challenges of Citizens' Assemblies globally. These sessions begin with an overview of the context and motivations behind a specific case, followed by a technical examination of crucial aspects. Participants are divided into groups and tasked to assess trade-offs and design principles to collectively process the information and develop relevant questions on the subject. The session concludes with interactive Q&A periods.

Workshops provide a more in-depth, collaborative exploration of specialized topics, allowing participants to co-create solutions tailored to their local contexts.

In addition to the two-day Citizens' Assembly School, on Wednesday 22nd, you can join the one-day workshop on Democracy Innovations led by Matt Leighninger.
