ABOUT US

Our vision

One of the few things most politicians, commentators and citizens agree on in these challenging times for democracy is that we should “bring politics closer to citizens”. Based on two decades of experience, we at FIDE believe that the best way to achieve this goal and strengthen our democracies is by involving citizens deeply and qualitatively in policymaking. Through deliberative democratic methods, citizens are empowered to actively engage in thoughtful discussions, make informed decisions, and collaboratively propose solutions to complex policy problems.

Citizens’ Assemblies are the most grounded process we have to bring deliberation to life. This implies taking citizens on a journey where they receive ample information about a policy problem and the trade-offs that different solutions would suggest. They go into a conversation with other citizens on equal terms and professional facilitation to propose solutions.

Because these processes work best in relatively small groups, it is our conviction that the participants should be a reflection of the diversity of their community, and everyone should have a fair chance to be part of that group. The best way to achieve this is by using a democratic lottery. Randomly selecting participants according to demographic variables ensures that people from all walks of life are included.
